Le Picnic: What to Pack For a Summer Picnic

Our favorite way to spend a lazy summer weekend? On a patch of grass in our favorite park (or our own backyard) with a pile of books and magazines, a bottle of rosé, and a basket full of fresh market fare. For the perfect French-inspired picnic spread, pack the following items:

  • Fresh baguette—no need to slice it, just break it off in chunks with your hands.

  • A variety of French cheeses—we like a mix of soft and hard cheeses, such as Brie, Roquefort, and Camembert.

  • Juicy berries like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, or ripe peaches.

  • Salty olives—our favorite variety are Castelvetrano olives, which are bright green and buttery.

  • An easy salad like fresh mixed greens or arugula with a drizzle of olive oil and champagne vinegar or this traditional haricot vert salad with heirloom tomatoes.

  • Something sweet like dark chocolate with almonds or petite French pastries.

  • A bottle (or two) of rosé or bubbly

Pack it all up in a big picnic basket, like this classic wicker basket (complete with mini salt and pepper shakers, a wine key, and utensils and cutlery for two!):
