My Style Icon

It’s the first day of spring, which means it’s my Grammy Dorothy’s birthday. She would have been 100 today. If she were still alive we’d no doubt be celebrating with a big bash, but instead I’m reminiscing about how lucky I was to have her in my life and looking through old photos of her, like this snapshot from a trip she took to Paris in the 1960s.

She was my first style icon and my forever inspiration. She taught me how to properly set a table, introduced me to the worlds of fashion and interior design, and fueled my love for travel. She was always up for an adventure and she traveled the globe far and wide; her suitcase always came home stuffed full of treasures, from copper pots to colorful textiles. Her closet was a place of wonder when I was a little girl, and I loved looking through her beautiful clothes, makeup, and jewelry. She was ahead of her time when it came to fashion and was a high-low dresser way before it was cool, effortlessly pairing pearls with jeans and handwoven Mexican skirts with crisp white Ralph Lauren blouses—always finished with a swipe of red Chanel lipstick. She loved a good party and getting all dolled up for the ballet or a fancy dinner, but she was truly happiest digging in the dirt from sun up till sun down in her amazing garden; her green thumb was fitting given her spring equinox birthday.

She had such a big impact on my life and I wish she was still here to meet my Chloe, but her spirit lives on and continues to inspires me daily. Love you, Grams.
